Auburn is now utilizing 3D-printed earhole covers from xoarmor to assist the players in hearing the call coming through the radio speakers in the helmet. Many other college football programs are following suit.
The Auburn quarterbacks will wear the covers for the remainder of the season. The defensive radio-equipped helmets don't appear to have the same cover.
NFL teams have used similar tactics in the past, typically utilizing tape over the earholes.
Many college football stadiums, especially in the SEC, seat drastically more fans than NFL stadiums. The noise levels are also dramatically higher than in the professional ranks. It'll be interesting to see how the new earhole covers hold up across the country throughout the rest of the season.
