This new optical clock uses a single laser and doesn't require cryogenic temperatures. The clock uses a frequency comb to directly excite a two-photon transition, which achieves the same performance as a traditional atomic clock with two lasers. The advance is the first step toward bringing high-performing atomic clocks into everyday applications and even in people's homes.
