Improvements to the EEW system — in collaboration with UC Berkeley Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center, or PEER, researchers — are expected to be completed by the end of 2026. According to a 2022 BART press release, the existing EEW system was built through the assistance of the United States Geological Survey, California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and Berkeley Seismology Lab. If the seismic intensity of an earthquake is over four out of 10 on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, trains are notified to halt for at least five minutes and decrease speeds to 27 mph.
