#DidYouKnow that 80% of NationalParkService lands are managed as wilderness? This September marks 60 years since the passage of the Wilderness Act, which established the National Wilderness Preservation System, protecting over 800 federally designated wilderness areas across the U.S. From deserts and swamps to the meadows and tundra, these lands are deeply connected to thousands of years of human history.
As we celebrate 60 years of success, there’s never been a better time to invest in the future of our parks, wildlife, and communities. We are looking back at a project in Rocky Mountain National Park where we added 33 acres to the park’s wilderness. The project involved removing a house and access road, which eliminated mechanized access and returned the area to its natural state. This restoration protects the adjacent wilderness by reducing development and traffic.
