Some of our E-Board members attended the National Safer Communities Summit in Hartford, a meeting of anti-gun violence advocates. Nearly a year ago, President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) into law. Spearheaded by Senator Murphy and supported by advocates across the nation, the BSCA is the most significant anti-gun violence legislation in decades. It strengthened background checks, made gun trafficking a federal crime, and allocated funding to help states implement red flag laws. The BSCA also invested in mental health, school safety, and community violence intervention programs. There’s still work to be done, but the BSCA was a significant step in the right direction. Today’s event highlighted its impact and the strength of the movement against gun violence. This is a top priority for many young people, and we’ll be fighting to end gun violence in Connecticut and across the country.
