A change at the top of the ticket for Democrats has caused a sizable shift in how Iowans are feeling about the 2024 presidential election. In June, the feeling most cited by Iowans about the election was exhaustion, at 60%, which edged lower in the new poll, to 57%. Now, the rise in optimism — driven almost entirely by a change in mood for Democrats — has replaced it as the most-cited feeling about the election to 62%, up from 49% in June. Those feelings of renewed excitement and optimism are reflected in the head-to-head competition between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump among likely voters in Iowa, where an energized Democratic base has helped cut into Trump’s previously overwhelming lead.
