Last year saw the installation of an impressive 473 gigawatts of clean energy capacity, highlighting the swift growth of solar and wind power. Although renewable energy still provides less of the world's electricity compared to fossil fuels, its development is progressing at a pace far exceeding that of non-renewable energy sources.
According to recent data from the International Renewable Energy Agency, renewables comprised nearly 86 percent of new electricity capacity globally last year. While the share of electricity generated by renewables—such as hydropower, solar, and wind—has been gradually increasing over the decades, it has accelerated significantly in recent years. The 473 gigawatts of renewable capacity installed last year marks a significant rise from the 308 GW installed the previous year and is nearly double the amount added in 2021.
