They can function as maps of our history; as modes of healing from intergenerational traumas; as bridges that connect our lived experiences together. Storytelling has been a way that our ancestors have kept our communities alive, even when forced to navigate institutions that were never built for them. While many of our stories have been silenced and continue to be silenced, our experiences deserve to take up space—to be told, seen, heard, and remembered.
