This cluster — the Carousel Lens — is made up of eight galaxies, one foreground galaxy known as the lens, and seven background galaxies, according to a press release by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It is considered “the most lucky alignment we’ve found in a map of a billion galaxies,” according to David Schlegel, a senior scientist at the lab and co-author of this study. He noted that this project began as a research project by undergraduate students at UC Berkeley and the University of San Francisco. “These students have done such a tremendously good job that this effort has snowballed into the most productive team in the world discovering strong gravitational lenses,” Schlegel said in an email.
