"When I took it out of the envelope last week I cracked it open just to read the first paragraph; when I next looked up, I was halfway through and late for teaching. In the best possible way, the experience of reading was like compulsively watching YouTube compilations of car accidents in the middle of the night. It dragged me through the full gamut of human emotion. I feel like I've read a lot of novels that put a handful of conflicting personalities in close quarters with external threat, but this is the only one i've read that fully fulfills the promise of that concept. It balances disgust with beauty, alienation with recognition, horror with comfort. She packs so much detail into such tight chapters, and paints entire portraits in a single brush stroke. It feels like this book has permanently altered my brain chemistry. It had connected with me on a level deeper than words. It makes me want to scream and cry and chew tinfoil.
