#NationalHazingPreventionWeek aims to empower individuals within member-seeking organizations and other groups to take a stand against hazing. Hazing, defined as any action or situation that recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health of an individual seeking to join or maintain membership in a group, is often linked to Greek-lettered organizations. However, research shows that “55% of college students involved in clubs, teams, and organizations experience hazing” (Allan and Madden, 2008). This week is dedicated to educating and empowering our community to report hazing incidents, breaking the silence and ending complicity. It reminds us all of the serious consequences of hazing and our shared responsibility to prevent it.
