As sea levels rise and storms intensify, developers are snapping up land that has been passed down through generations of Black families, often without clear legal ownership due to heirs’ property laws. Despite these challenges, Black residents are fighting back, organizing to preserve their ancestral lands through conservation efforts, historic designations, and sustainable forestry practices, all in an effort to protect their homes and communities from both climate change and gentrification.
