Congratulations are in order for
#PittCSD PhD Student Kevin Renz Ambrocio! Kevin was awarded NIH F31 for his project titled “Profiling Upper Aerodigestive Functioning in Sporadic Inclusion Body Myositis”! Kevin’s mentorship team consists of a number of CSD faculty members including his sponsor Dr. Kendrea Garand, co-sponsor Dr. Jim Coyle, and collaborator Dr. Mark Zhang. Excellent work, Kevin and team!
Project Summary: Swallowing-related respiratory complications are the leading cause of early mortality in sporadic inclusion body myositis (IBM), though the physiologic mechanisms underlying such issues remain unclear. This study aims to define IBM’s impact on swallowing and airway clearance function using well-tested assessment methods, helping uncover key respiratory-swallowing relationships to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment.
