The Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP) has been uncovering artifacts at the riverfront of Grant’s Villa, claimed by the first British governor of Florida, James Grant (1768-1783). Grant’s Villa was a 1,450-acre indigo plantation located approximately six miles northwest of St. Augustine. The tract was bounded east and south by the Guana River, west by the North River, and north by vacant land. A wooden boat was discovered this week, abandoned at this riverfront anchorage probably in the 1800s. Its remains consist of almost the entire bottom of a cross-planked skiff, with an intact keel plank and remnants of a side plank. The LAMP team will get drone footage, attempt a photomodel, and map the individual timbers with an EOS Arrow Positioning System (submeter GPS receiver). eos_gnss #staugustinelighthouse #florida #staugustine #stjohnscounty #archaeology #maritimearchaeology #LAMP #staugustinelighthouse #maritimehistory #ushistory #boat
