Called “The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement” she dedicated her life to the fight for social justice.
Angry over the lynching of Emmett Till and learning of the acquittal of Till’s murder, she decided to stand up by remaining seated on a Montgomery Buss on December 1, 1955. Her refusal to move for a white passenger led to her arrest and sparked the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott.
