From early September through October, bull elk can be heard bugling. This sound is made to advertise their fitness to cow elk and to show off to other bulls. It’s often described as a multi-tone sound that begins low and transitions into what can only be described as a loud scream. Elk are most active before sunrise and after sunset but will bugle throughout the night as well. When visiting parks that have elk, stay at a safe distance. They are unpredictable during this time of year and may change direction without warning. Avoid trouble, trouble, trouble and stay at least 25 yards (two bus lengths) and back away immediately if an elk approaches you.
