I always want the first song on an album to grab the listener, and often that means it has some bells and whistles or it’s punchy in some way, but when I wrote this song, it kind of wowed me with something different: the truth. When I was sequencing the record, I had a few passing doubts about putting this one first—what if I lose people? what if this doesn’t sound current? Is this even pop? is it jazz? Oh god, what if people think this is folk?—but then it occurred to me: I love everything about this song and it sets the tone for the album.
