For the past three weeks, I have been diligently working on the second film for the @smithsonian Global Health Program One Health Workforce Academy, “Ticks & Vector-Borne Illnesses.” This film highlights the impacts of ticks and other vector-borne (leeches, mosquitos, etc.) illnesses on humans, wildlife, and livestock. Some examples of the negative impact are global epidemics (ie. Malaria, West Nile Virus, etc.), decrease in food security, and death. It is crucial to understand and examine vectors to fully comprehend and strategize how these vectors are going to affect the community, wildlife, and livestock population. By studying vectors which carry vector-borne illnesses, One Health Workforce scientists can communicate with local public health officials, health workers, and communities about emerging infectious diseases.
