Day Two: We ended up starting at Willie Mays Park in Fairfield, Alabama, hometown of Willie Mays, about 25 minutes from the heart of Birmingham. The baseball field is in the middle of the neighborhood where Mays grew up playing and learning baseball. The field was rundown, covered in weeds, and was missing bases, so they were drawn in the dirt using a marker while the scoreboard’s lights had been stolen or broke. The kids also used a recycling bin as a strike zone behind the plate as well. After Willie Mays Park, we took a quick trip to the oldest standing baseball park in America, Rickwood Field. While there, I took photos of Harold Reynolds and Roy Wood Jr. talking to former Negro League Players as they learned more about the history behind the Negro Leagues and what it was like to be an black baseball player up until the 1960s.
