On September 29, 1980, Stevie Wonder released ‘Hotter Than July.’ The album featured backing vocals from Michael Jackson, Charlie & Ronnie Wilson of the GAP Band, Eddie Levert, and more. As well as singles like “Master Blaster (Jammin),” “Lately,” and “Happy Birthday.” The final track, “Happy Birthday,” was written by Stevie in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. He used this song to campaign for MLK Jr’s birthday to be observed as a national holiday in the United States—it would later become a federal holiday. The album included a sleeve liner dedicated to this campaign with a message from Stevie, as well as a thumbprint that was presumed to serve as his signature.
