On September 29, 1998, the most iconic photo in hip-hop history was captured by the legendary Gordon Parks.
The photo—titled ‘A Great Day in Hip-Hop’—was organized by XXL magazine and paid homage to the 1958 photo, ‘A Great Day in Harlem,’ by Art Kane. Similar to the original 1958 photo which featured many of the jazz greats, XXL invited over 100 of hip-hop’s best artists and producers for this modern take.
This historical moment covered the December 1998 issue of XXL and featured artists like Kool Herc, Rakim, Slick Rick, De La Soul, Grandmaster Flash, and many more.
