Have you seen this critter creeping or flying around your home lately? They’re probably coming inside during the evening for warmth. We’ve seen several reports of them on social media and thought we’d look into them. According to local naturalist, John E. Riutta, the bug is probably a Mediterranean katydid (Phanoptera nana) noting that the single lobe at the end of the abdomen and the tiny red-brown spots on the legs and wings are keys to its identity. He also said that they are invasive, and do particular harm to pear trees in California. In the Pacific Northwest, the species is largely confined to the Portland Metro-area. Several commenters on nextdoor.com have noted them devouring their fruit trees and flowers. They’re also a good food source for birds and reach 1 to 1.5 inches in length.
