Lost No More: De Winton’s Golden Mole
This little cutie was one of the most wanted elusive species on Re:wild's Search for Lost Species list. In 2023, it was rediscovered after 87 years. Found burrowing beneath the sand in Port Nolloth, South Africa, these small, blind moles rarely leave visible tracks. Using a specially trained scent-detection dog, endangeredwildlifetrust safely gathered over 100 soil samples to test for environmental DNA and got a rare glimpse of a De Winton's Golden Mole scurrying above the sand.
As we kick off Lost Species Month, we are celebrating rediscoveries like this one—reminding us that lost species can still be found and protected.
