A Central Point man’s solo hike up 9,493-foot Mount McLoughlin took a dangerous turn Sept. 28, when he got lost on his descent. A text to his girlfriend led rescuers to him as the temperature dropped from a daytime high in the 80s to 29 degrees before sunrise. The 40-year-old hiker started his trek early in the morning, aiming to summit and return home on a day trip while dressed in a cotton T-shirt and shorts, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. After reaching the peak, he turned around but quickly found himself off course, venturing into rugged volcanic terrain.
