Hurricane Helene made landfall in the US on September 27, and the devastation was mostly in parts of the country unaccustomed to hurricanes. Eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, and South Carolina were hit heavily by flooding and strong winds, in some cases completely wiping out entire towns. Numerous state and national parks and hiking trails in the Appalachian region, including Great Smoky Mountains National Park, are closed for the time being while the area recovers.
At the link in our bio we have details on park advisories and closures, what trails to avoid, as well as what towns are welcoming visitors in hopes of supporting their economy. Check back for updates and continue to allocate resources to the relief efforts if you can.
