The black and white fluffy pup isn’t just Glacier National Park’s adorable mascot, she’s an official B.A.R.K. Ranger that protects visitors from dangerous wildlife encounters. The 10-year-old Border Collie trained in wildlife shepherding and “hazing, ” which refers to various non-lethal methods of discouraging overly familiar wildlife, at Wind River Bear Institute in Florence, Montana. Wondering what her day-to-day looks like? Gracie patrols the parking lot at Glacier’s Logan Pass for mountain goats and bighorn sheep. Her job is to figure out the safest way to head the animals off so they stay the perfect distance away: far enough for safety’s sake but close enough for wildlife viewing.
