March On Festival Day 1 Recap: In partnership with the National Archives, March On proudly celebrated the centennial of civil rights icon James Baldwin. The sold-out event kicked off with a screening of the powerful documentary James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket, featuring interviews with Maya Angelou, Amiri Baraka, and Baldwin himself.
The afternoon continued with a compelling panel discussion moderated by Anthony Coley, where filmmaker Karen Thorsen and Dr. Frank Leon Roberts reflected on Baldwin’s legacy.
Highlights included:
💬 Karen Thorsen: “His smile lit up the film, and all of a sudden, he was huge, and he’s been huge for the rest of my life.”
💬 Dr. Frank Leon Roberts: “Baldwin is that gate we have to unlatch. Once we do, we don’t think of the world in the same way.”
💬 joseph webb: “I was really inspired by James’s experience in the pulpit at a young age.”
The tribute also featured a moving performance of “James” by joseph webb, accompanied by drummer Keith Butler...
