Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill Sept. 28 that calls for the California State University and UC systems to update their codes of conduct to prevent hostile campus environments and provide training for students on protesting with civility and respect. SB 1287, or the “Equity in Higher Education Act: prohibition on violence, harassment, intimidation, and discrimination,” was authored by Senator Steve Glazer. He said in an April 10 Senate Standing Committee on Education meeting that though discussion around the bill mostly centered on antisemitism, it was intended to be applicable to all types of discrimination.
