We have long maintained that bird-glass collisions are a global problem. While research on this major conservation concern has primarily been conducted in North America, ornithologists are keenly aware that birds will fall victim to untreated glass wherever it exists in the world. More proof of this has now come in from Brazil, where a recently conducted study highlights the traumatic injuries that birds experience when they collide with glass. The study examined 46 bird carcasses from 23 species, and found severe injuries including skull fractures, brain hemorrhages, and ruptured organs. Moreover, injuries that result in death are not always visible to the naked eye; researchers determined the true extent of the internal damage by using X-rays. Ruddy Ground Dove and Pale-breasted Thrush were noted as the most frequently colliding species. This new research underscores the urgent need for better protection measures.
