In the fall, their 5:45 a.m. Wednesday lake practices are followed by early-morning Sunday sessions on the Hudson. Most of the group that gathered were focused on the upcoming Head of the Charles, the mid-October, three-day, 11,000-rower, Massachusetts regatta. That event runs from October 18 to 20. The Survivors team launched in July 2023 and rowing on it has “meant everything,” said Mary O’Hara, who, with her teammates, has forged friendships with other survivor teams, including its “sister group” from Connecticut’s Saugatuck Survive OARS. “The sense of community is kind of remarkable,” said O’Hara, who rows in honor of her mother, Betty, who died of ovarian cancer in 1992 at age 64.
