The Pernambuco Holly tree remained a ghost of the forest, its existence lost to science for 186 years. 🌿 But hope emerged last year, when four resilient trees were rediscovered in a small patch of greenery near Recife, Brazil. Against all odds, these small trees have held on, nestled within a bustling metropolitan area of 6 million people. Now, ecologist Gustavo Martinelli and a dedicated team from Jardim Botânico de Recife are working to propagate the species and embark on further searches for more. The Pernambuco Holly’s rediscovery reminds us that even in urbanized regions, nature persists—and with support, it can thrive again. This tree was one of Re:wild's most wanted lost species, and we’re proud to spotlight it as a successful rediscovery story during this #LostSpeciesMonth! 📸: Fred Jordão #SearchforLostSpecies #LostSpecies #ReversetheRed #ConservationOptimism #LostSpeciesMonth #ConservationMatters #RediscoverHope
