Stunned. 2pm EST on the clock and we rushed into Biergarten Haus in DC for what promised to be a memorable finish to Group E. As we were all taking our seats, the back-to-back goals by Germany and Spain put Die Mannshaft fans at ease. It was all going according to script. Beers, Bavarian Bratwurst sandwiches, and scarves aloft filled the room. Then the second half happened. A rollercoaster of emotions as all four teams did musical chairs with the top two spots in the group. Unbelievable. Germany were able to turn things around, with every goal getting a measured celebration by the fans. During the last ten minutes, everyone huddled around the one TV playing the Spain-Japan game. A few “vamos España” were heard here and there as the Germans hoped for an equalizer from La Roja. But it never came. By 4pm, the unthinkable had happened. There were no tears, though. Only shocked expressions as we stumbled outside still trying to process what we’d witnessed.
