Most residents of the Pacific Northwest have “massive earthquake” on the list of fears they must wrestle with every night before falling asleep. The “big one,” a 9.0 earthquake on the Cascadia subduction zone could come at any moment, as The New Yorker reminded us in 2015. But most people living in Oregon didn’t need that graphic story to tell us there could be a really big, devastating earthquake followed by a tsunami now. Or now. Or now. We grew up knowing that was always a possibility. But what better way to deal with fear than preparedness? On Thursday, Oregonians will get a chance to test out how they would deal with the “big one” during The Great Oregon ShakeOut, part of a worldwide earthquake safety effort.
