Since 1937, Columbus Day has been commemorated as a national holiday in the United States to commemorate Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas. Today is also celebrated as Indigenous Peoples’ Day which honors America’s first inhabitants and the Tribal Nations that continue to thrive today.
Over 20,000 years ago, people walked along the edges of an ancient lake on land that would one day be part of White Sands National Park. Today, the oldest fossilized footprints in North America remind us that the human history of this continent spans hundreds of generations.
