This might not get shared as much as posts about the devastation, but I feel compelled to share what I’ve witnessed since Helene passed. I hope this post reaches every corner of the world. For seven days, I drove nearly 2,500 miles, documenting and helping in rural areas across western North Carolina (Old Fort, Heaton, Banner Elk, Creston, Lansing, Spruce Pine, Burnsville, Boone, Zionville, Poplar, and more), rural Virginia like Damascus, and far eastern Tennessee, including Erwin, Elizabethton, and Elk Park. What I’ve seen is nothing short of incredible. Communities and people from all over the country have come together like never before. Churches are leading the charge, closely followed by local fire departments. Many of these churches and fire departments have transformed into resource hubs, or emergent groups, gathering and distributing aid.
