Forget the Oregon Vortex – Gold Hill’s biggest house of mystery is the tasting room at Del Rio Vineyards. That’s where a spirit named Hattie is said to move furniture and peer out windows at night. But who is Hattie, and why is she so restless?
Hattie Haymond died on June 16, 1891, in a house adjacent to the Rock Point Stage Hotel. The old hotel is now home to the Del Rio Vineyards tasting room and, possibly, a wandering spirit. Hattie’s grave in The Rock Point Pioneer Cemetery is just a few hundred yards away.
A portrait believed to be of Hattie Haymond hangs on a wall at the Del Rio Vineyards tasting room. It shows a young woman with a pinched face, vacant gaze, long crimped hair, and the trappings of frontier aristocracy.
Ghost hunters are drawn to this eerie portrait like Scooby-Doo to a snack.
