A security fence in place for decades along the Bayview-Hunters Point shoreline will come down Saturday to reveal the dramatic transformation of a derelict boatyard into the most expensive city-owned park in San Francisco history.
In a community that has historically lacked waterfront access, “The intent of the park is to get people as close as they can to the water,” said project manager David Froehlich.
Rec and Park paid $5 million for the 2.5-acre parcel in 2014, and it cost $68 million to build 900 Innes Park.
“This is the most important park project in modern San Francisco history,” Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg said back in 2021. At that time, 900 Innes was still covered in several tons of concrete that had to be jackhammered out and removed, along with 3 feet of contaminated sediment beneath it.
