Cher was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Saturday night. Nearly 48 years ago to the day, she was at Canisius High School. In a story that has become legendary, Cher accompanied Gregg Allman to CHS for a surprise concert for Canisius students on Oct. 20, 1976. This two-page spread of photos is from the 1977 “Arena” – the CHS yearbook. Cher and Allman were married at the time, with Allman in Buffalo undergoing treatment for a drug problem. CHS students – in a testament to the power of the written word that has always been stressed in our halls – wrote letters to Allman requesting that he come by 1180 Delaware Ave. Senior class president Mike Militello ’77 started the campaign, and when Allman was particularly moved by the letter of Brian Procknal ’77, Allman stunningly called Procknal at home and conversations about a concert at CHS began.
