According to an email from campus spokesperson Adam Ratliff, the job is being introduced as a way of managing UC Berkeley’s “Major Events Policy” by having a director versed in “assemblage safety and security” for events, such as bonfire rallies and Golden Bear Orientation. “This important role brings expertise in managing large scale events that are an important element of our campus community. This position will also be an important campus stakeholder in the operation of major campus and high profile events,” Ratliff said in the email.
