Fortune Solomon โ16, who helped coach the South Sudan menโs basketball team in its Olympic debut this summer, has been named the inaugural recipient of the USF Sport Management Alumni of the Year Award.
This summer, the South Sudan team, made up almost exclusively of refugees and children of refugees, captured hearts worldwide with its remarkable and inspiring underdog story. Displaying grit, determination, and focused coaching, the team represented the young country that gained independence in 2011 in its first-ever Olympic appearance.
Solomon, now an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Netsโ G-League team, served as an assistant coach for the South Sudanese team for three years as they worked up to the Olympic stage.
Fortune returned to USF this past weekend at Celebrate USF, where he was given special recognition by USF Sport Management Advisory Board members, faculty, staff, former classmates, USF Alum and NBA Legend Bill Cartwright!
