China is a step closer in its quest to measure elusive particles called neutrinos after a massive subterranean detector started operating in the country’s south. A sphere about 35 metres (115ft) in diameter is the central element of the US$376 million Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (Juno) project in Jiangmen, Guangdong province.
