The ancient Celts and Druids may have ignited autumn’s Samhain festival eons ago, but Oregonians keep the fire burning. On Saturday, redheads, kilt wearers and people of Celtic ancestry and many who are not, jumped onto the dance floor of the Willamette Heritage Center in Salem, and moved to the music, interlocking arms with friends and strangers, and celebrating community.
Hosted by the Willamette Valley-based Ceili of the Valley Society, the Samhain Celtic New Year Festival draws groups throughout the state focused on the Celtic cultures of Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Galicia and the Isle of Man.
“It’s a reunion,” said Elisa Chandler, who called steps in dances from Brittany at the festival finale.
