More roadblocks are in store for a possible transformation of two major downtown streets in light of impending budget cuts in Des Moines.
At a City Council work session Monday morning, DesMoinesGov Engineer Steve Naber recommended the city spend about $5 million to keep Locust Street and Grand Avenue one-way streets and add bike lanes and reduce traffic lanes on Grand Avenue.
But City Manager Scott Sanders said Des Moines will have to hold off on the project indefinitely, signaling it could be one of multiple items delayed or placed on the chopping block in a "package" of budget cuts.
City officials did not immediately elaborate on what types of cuts the city might expect. In a statement to the Des Moines Register, Sanders said: "Right now, we’re forecasting and evaluating the resources we expect to have available when putting together our budget for fiscal year 2026."
