On the very last day of our #hosted cruise with @vikingcruises, we woke up to this view of a part of Passau. It’s a city in Germany where three rivers meet: the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz (two of which you can see meeting in this photo). The meeting of those rivers has given this area significance going all the way back to Roman times. Even the fortress on the hill has foundations which were first lain in 1219. So it has been a center of trading and a prosperous place since long before it was known as Passau. Unfortunately, those three rivers also mean this is an area of frequent flooding and as you walk around the city, you will notice the lines on the sides of buildings accompanied by dates, those are the high water marks from past floods. As recent as 2013 there was a flood so bad that water was at or over the second floors of some buildings. The attitude seems to be, such is life - we deal with it efficiently and then we move on.
