After hours of walking, along the river and through the markets, past military demonstrations (for a Chilean public holiday) and down tree-lined streets...my favorite part of our city tour with @upscapetravel was climbing all the way to the top of Cerro Santa Lucia where Castillo Hidalgo gives you a panoramic view of the city. And what a view it is! Most of the structure is brick and stone, and truly looks like a castle. However, the top most turret is painted red and yellow, which makes for a compelling contrast to the surrounding cityscape. What's so interesting about the park itself is that it is where the city was actually founded. From up there you can see the layers of historic architecture give way to modern high rises and you can clearly see the path of growth. It's also very lush, with flowering plants and trees making it easier to ignore the smog that sometimes obscures the views of the Andes. I highly recommend both the tour and Cerro Santa Lucia itself when you visit Santia...
