The town of San Pedro, and @altoatacama where we're staying, are ideally located to explore Northern Chile's varying terrain. They feel to me as if they're in the center of everything. One of my favorite things we've done is bike across Salar de Atacama. It was a chance to see things not from behind a van window, a way to connect to the landscape in a more physical way. I highly recommend it if you're visiting the area, especially if you're in great shape. This is one of the places we stopped for a quick rest during the 20 KM ride, and it's where I had a kind of "wow moment;" the landscape around us seemed to stretch forever and I felt so small yet so grateful to be here. After this, the ground became 100% white with salt that had come to the surface of the ground. It's what gives the area its name in fact. It's the third largest salt flat in the world after Bolivia and Utah in the United States. It is #OnlyInSouthAmerica and #onlyinChile!
