This is the first-ever recording of a python swallowing a full-sized whitetail deer. The encounter from 2022 is the center of a new study about just how destructive these invasive snakes can be on native wildlife.
Ian Bartoszek, a biologist who’s spent 12 years tracking and hunting Burmese pythons in South Florida, says it was the most intense thing he’s ever witnessed.
“If anybody’s on the fence about what these animals are doing in South Florida, they are clearly eating their way through the food web of the Everglades. And that includes whitetail deer.”
Bartoszek says it took around 30 minutes for the snake to get the back half of the deer’s body into its gullet. After the deer was fully swallowed, he and another researcher held down the snake and pressed on it until it regurgitated its meal. They later weighed the buck at 77 pounds.
