"He brought the happiness we didn’t know we were missing,” Charlie McGee's frat brother shared. 🧡
Charlie has Down syndrome. At the time, there were a handful of Clemson students with intellectual disabilities who were involved in Greek life, but none had gone through a formal rush process. Charlie wanted the full experience.
“Charlie has two older brothers and he has always followed in their footsteps,” his mom, Alana McGee, tells
TODAY.com. “They both went to college and were in fraternities, so he expected to do the same.”
And he's doing just that.
In September, after going through rush, Charlie accepted a bid at his first choice: Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE). In total, Charlie, a Clemson junior, received bids at four fraternities.
“Charlie is really popular,” says PIKE treasurer Zach Freeman. “We were worried. We were thinking, ‘This kid isn’t going to (choose) us.’”
“I was so excited,” Charlie tells
TODAY.com, noting that he was drawn to PIKE because “they do great things.”
