Ah, the smells of autumn… Pumpkin spice, fresh leaves, piping hot apple cider donuts, etc. But, as the saying “There are two types of girls on Halloween,” goes, we’re more interested in the nose-curling stench of death 🙃. Believe it or not, catacombs are a pretty popular tourist attraction this time of year and we couldn’t help but to wonder if the ancient underground burial sites filled to the brim with human bones actually stink to the high heavens. So, before heading there ourselves, we asked an archaeologist if the smell of decomposing bodies is really that deadly. "The modern living people that are walking around the catacombs are the more active agents of decomposition and taphonomy now for the bones than the bones themselves!" Dr. Rachel Kalisher explained.
