As rows of over 200 Chemistry 1 and 2 students stood next to their lunch tables crossing their hands over their faces in peace signs to resemble mole whiskers, the chemistry department’s annual Mole day celebration had just begun. Weeks of planning, advertising, gathering materials and finding vendors led up to the celebration in the cafeteria at exactly 6:02 a.m.. Mole Day, an event organized by chemistry students and teachers, is a competition between the classes to celebrate the mole, a unit of measurement in chemistry, and earn extra credit. With a new theme each year such as this year’s “despicamole me” theme, students can participate in Mole Day by playing games and competitions to earn their class points. The class with the most points wins double the extra credit and bragging rights over the other chemistry classes.
